Professor Kiama's extensive administrative experience is evident in the numerous senior management roles he has expertly navigated at the University of Nairobi. Prior to his Vice-Chancellorship, he served concurrently as Deputy Vice Chancellor for Human Resource and Administration and Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance, Planning, and Development (2019-2020). He also held the esteemed position ofPrincipal of the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (2016-2019). His foundational leadership was instrumental as the Founder Director of the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies(2010-2016), a testament to his foresight and dedication to environmental causes. Professor Kiama's academic journey commenced in 1990 with a Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Nairobi, where he was immediately recruited as an assistant lecturer. His progression through the academic ranks was swift and steady, becoming a Lecturer in 1995, Senior Lecturer in 2001, Associate Professor in 2012, and ultimately a full Professor in 2016.

His pursuit of advanced knowledge led him to international institutions. He earned his Master’s degree in veterinary Anatomy from the University of Nairobi, supported by a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). He further specialized in structural biology, obtaining his PhD from the University of Bern, Switzerland, in 2001, through a scholarship from the Swiss Federal Scholarship Commission.

An accomplished scholar with 34 years of experience, Professor Kiama has significantly contributed to research, teaching, and administration at prestigious institutions worldwide, including St. Andrews University (Scotland), Free University of Berlin (Germany), University of Bern (Switzerland), and the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa). His research primarily explores structure-function relationships, encompassing diverse areas such as phagocytosis in dendritic cells and macrophages, morphology of the avian pecten oculi, tissue regeneration in mammals, and bioprospecting for plant species with nutraceutical potential.

This included the timely and 100% remittance of PAYE deductions, averaging Kshs 200 million monthly, which resulted in a historic Certificate of Tax Compliance from KRA. He oversaw the substantial clearance of long-standing debts, such as Ksh 273 million owed to CHUNA and a drastic reduction in commercial loan debt. Through impactful cost-reduction measures, including reducing annual payroll costs by Ksh 2.3 billion and administrative expenses by Ksh 700 million, coupled with the closure of non-profitable satellite centers and the rationalization of tuition and accommodation fees, he ensured the University's financial resilience.Automation of payment processes and optimization of staff through natural attrition further streamlined operations and ensured a sustainable wage bill without compromising productivity.

His leadership fostered an environment of enhanced research, innovation, and strong academia-industry linkages. He inspired a more than doubling of the research fund portfolio, with expenditure rising from Kshs 1.9 billion to Kshs 4.7 billion, and successfully secured strategic grants from major global partners like USAID and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Collaborations with industry leaders such as Elgon Kenya, CISCO, and Mabati Rolling Mills resulted in valuable contributions and the establishment of an Innovation and Incubation Lab, nurturing new opportunities for youth.

Significant government and organizational support were secured for equipping key faculties and establishing new centres, while long-stalled projects were revived and critical facilities like the Wangari Maathai Institute and the Mahatma Gandhi Graduate Library were completed and commissioned. Theupgrade of the data centre and the digitalization of 84.7% of university processes, including teaching, research, and campus services, revolutionized efficiency and accessibility. Through consistent engagement, he fostered uninterrupted operations and a significant decline in industrial unrest. He facilitated a smooth Chancellor transition and ensured data protection compliance with the development of a comprehensive Data Policy. The rationalization of academic programs from 578 to 321, the reorganization of cost centres, and the devolution of services to faculties streamlined the University's structure and enhanced accountability. He prioritized staff and student welfare by harmonizing staff dependents' data, introducing annual staff recognition awards, and streamlining healthcare provisionthrough diversified partnerships. Crucially, he launched numerous student support programs, including a Students Compassion Day, Work Study Programs, and a Student Wellness Centre, demonstrating a deep commitment to the holistic development of the student body. The development of a new Strategic Plan 2023-2027 and regular communication through Vice Chancellor's addresses further enhanced transparency and future direction.
